Update an existing page when the missing answer belongs to the reader decision that page already serves. Create a new page when the reader needs a materially different answer. If the intended page has an access or indexing problem, address that before commissioning more content.
Use this as an editorial decision rule, not a formula for earning AI citations. Start with the exact customer question, the engine where your brand was missing, and the page you expected it to cite. Then decide whether the work is a technical fix, a focused update, or a distinct new resource.
Check access before rewriting
Ask whoever manages the site to check the intended page’s indexing status and investigate any crawl restrictions before assigning a rewrite.
Keep the diagnosis specific. A crawl restriction calls for an access fix; it does not, by itself, show that the explanation needs replacing. Once access and indexing are checked, assess whether the page answers the question.
Update a page that serves the same decision
Compare the missing question with the existing page’s purpose:
- Audience: Is the page written for the person asking?
- Main question: Does its central explanation address what that person needs to know?
- Decision: Does it help with the same task, such as evaluating product fit rather than implementing a purchase?
Favor an update when these align and the missing answer fits naturally within the page. Specify the change instead of asking for a longer article: correct an outdated product fact, answer an omitted subquestion, or support an important claim with an appropriate source. Keep qualifications beside the claims they limit.
For example, if a product overview leaves out a supported feature detail that matters to the purchase decision, propose adding that answer to the overview. Do not create a separate URL solely to accommodate a keyword variation.
Treat the revision as a reader-focused improvement, not a citation recipe.
Create a page for a different reader task
Require a distinct purpose before approving a new URL. Complete this sentence for both the proposed page and the existing one:
“After reading this page, the reader should be able to ___.”
If the outcomes are indistinguishable, revisit the proposed split. A different title alone does not establish a different assignment.
Consider a hypothetical software company. Its product overview helps a founder decide whether the tool fits the business. An implementation guide helps an administrator connect systems and configure the tool after purchase. Those pages serve different decisions, even though they concern the same product.
The implementation guide also needs its own evidence, such as applicable setup documentation. A distinct topic is not permission to invent instructions, eligibility rules, performance claims, or customer experience. Approve the new resource only when its purpose and supporting material are clear.
Track the change without assuming causation
Keep a change log with the customer question, engine, target page, revision date, and specific edit. For later checks, record the question wording and relevant settings, then distinguish a brand mention from a citation to the intended page. Track visits and conversions separately.
“The page was cited after the update” records a sequence. It does not establish that the update caused the citation. Keep the same distinction when interpreting changes in traffic or conversions.
Turn the decision into a focused brief
Before assigning work, capture:
- Reader question: The question and decision the content must resolve.
- Existing coverage: The relevant page and what it already answers.
- Chosen action: Fix access, update the page, or create a distinct resource, with a reason.
- Evidence: Sources supporting the facts the answer requires.
- Reader’s next step: What the reader should be able to do after reading.
Aeolo is an AI search visibility and content agent that tracks prompts across engines, then creates and publishes sourced content based on what the data shows.
Use the visibility gap as an input to the brief, not an automatic instruction to add another page. Start with your URL in Aeolo, then decide whether the missing answer needs a focused update or a genuinely new resource.
